Sample Lesson Plan




The things to consider...........

Subject: Social Studies

Level:Secondary Three

Topic: Conflict in Multi-Ethnic Societies

Purpose:

1) To allow students to identify the causes of conflict in Northern Ireland
2) To allow students to evaluate which cause is most important in explaining the continuation of violence in Northen Ireland.


Description:

Students will form groups of 5. Each group will appoint a leader, a secretary, a time-keeper, a collector and a motivator. The roles are as follows:




a) Leader - to keep the discussion on track and to lead the discussion of the group.
b) Secretary - to write / type down the discussion points and be responsible for typing in the group's entry.
c) Time-keeper - to remind the group of the time scheduled for a particular activity.
d) Collector - to collect whatever materials that the teacher hands out.
e) Motivator - to get the group motivated in accomplishing their task when faced with an obstacle in their research.

Teacher will first use PPT to present the scope of the day's activity and the objective of the exercise. Groups will be assigned and roles be decided within the group itself.

When students are settled down in their groups, the teacher will brief them on the specifics of the task at hand.

Each group is to visit a wiki /blog page to look at four sources (groups might be assigned to start with different sources so that most sources would have been covered if time ran out) which have been selected for this exercise. Students will then use the handout provided to analyze each source in detail. From the sources provided, students will eventually infer the reasons for conflict.

Group will eventually decide which cause is the most fundemental for the continuation of conflict in NI.

This will be consoldiated under the Group evaluation page of a wiki / comment under a group evaluation post.
Pre-lesson Activity:

Duration: 70 min (2 periods)





ICT Skills:

Process information from online sources.
Access and evaluate different forms of digital media (youtube videos / blogs / online journalist and pictures) to produce a coherent reply to the Big Question.




Activity: Intro / Grouping / Briefing / Collection of materials- 15 minutes
Activity: Reading / analyzing of sources using structured worksheets 45 minutes
Activity: Typing of their evaluation into the website - 5 minutes
Acitivty: Summary of lesson - 5 minutes

The little things that we missed out on our last Official NDP Song...

I like the little things in this video, things reflect the "little Singaporeans". Things that might somethings deviate from the official prescription but nevertheless, defines us as who we are and how we want to be seen.

Why the little things


There are little things in life that we miss out...



We miss out on the important details when we answer SEQ.

We forget to add in that crucial link to the issue that defines explanation.

We fail to see the small print.

We miss out on the important information that sometimes people want us to miss.



So this blog will focus on the little things, to open a new perspective.
